Luke 2:49-51 (NIV)
"Why were you searching for me?" he asked. "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them.
Even upon His realization that He was the Son of God Himself, Jesus never abuses that title or gets out of relation with His earthly parents. The scripture tells us that He was obedient to them. If anyone had a right to get out of line and say he wasnt taking orders from anyone, we would think that Jesus would be that guy. After all, He is the son of God. But He never does, He stays in relation, and grows in wisdom and stature among God and man.
Couple of things I see here;
1. Jesus was humble enough to submit to His authority on earth, to not get out of step with the traditions of an earthly family. And to not become one of those Kings kids, Or PKs as we refer to them now. Going along thinking that because of who they are in relation to the leadership gives them certain freedoms soon growing out of control and becoming unbearable to be around. And by the way, shame on the parents that allow that to happen.
2. It implies that He took care of family business, He didn't get distracted with ministry to the point that He neglected His home life. You never hear of Him missing time with His family after this incident, probably learned a lesson from it.
We could all learn from this, God doesn't want us doing anything that disrupts the family or makes for an absent parent. It doesn't honor God to stay so busy in ministry that the home never has a chance to grow and be nurtured.
In the end you will regret the time lost with your children and spouse, and the reality is that your ministry wont be as good as it could be if you were more balanced.
