Judg 18:7-10 (NIV)
So the five men left and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living in safety, like the Sidonians, unsuspecting and secure. And since their land lacked nothing, they were prosperous. Also, they lived a long way from the Sidonians and had no relationship with anyone else.
When they returned to Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers asked them, "How did you find things?"
They answered, "Come on, let's attack them! We have seen that the land is very good. Aren't you going to do something? Don't hesitate to go there and take it over. When you get there, you will find an unsuspecting people and a spacious land that God has put into your hands, a land that lacks nothing whatever." .......
Judg 18:27-28 (NIV)
Then they took what Micah had made, and his priest, and went on to Laish, against a peaceful and unsuspecting people. They attacked them with the sword and burned down their city. There was no one to rescue them because they lived a long way from Sidon and had no relationship with anyone else.
Do you find that you are your own island sometimes? The people of Laish were living the good life, they were prosperous, and they had it all...except one thing they lacked. Relations with someone close.
It seems that there plan to stay away from the crowd backfired on them. Perhaps they didn't want to share in the wealth that they had, but in the end they lost it all, there was no one there close to call on to help defend them.
In life we tend to do that as well, we don't want to be bothered by the world around us or don't want to share in the wealth we have attained so we isolate and move far away from relationships so we aren't bothered by anyone. And that doesn't mean we move to another county it can be that we are in a busy apartment in busy downtown wherever.
When we do that we leave ourselves wide open for attack. God has put people in your life that are more than just a friend or neighbor, they can be part of your armor.
In Eccl 4:12 the bible tells us
Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Look around for those people today in your life that God has given you and make sure you are not your own island.
